Taylor Falls

Taylor Falls – is a small city located close to the border of Minnesota and Wisconsin, on the shore of the St. Croix River. One of Zhenya’s colleagues recommended Taylor Falls to us as a great place for canoeing and kayaking. We were told that a canoe trip takes more than 3 hours and even after you are completely wiped out you can’t turn back and have to finish the trip, after the trip you are and your reward is a good sleep at the end:-).

So, we came to the place, rented canoe and prepared for long exhausting hours of paddling. To our surprise it took us only one hour and a half to finish the trip and we were not tired at all! I don’t want to say that we are pros at canoeing, but we had tried it several times before at the Chain of Lakes.
Actually, Taylor Falls is the great place to try canoeing for the first time. The St. Croix River at this place is knee-deep, so there is absolutely no risk of being drowned, even if you can’t swim. Furthermore, the St. Croix River scenery is very beautiful – the route goes along cliffs and pine forests:

Several times the “Taylors Falls Princess“, a pretty paddlewheel boat, went by us. I’m wondering how this big boat managed not to run aground in this shallow river?

I liked the American’s approach to canoeing. They loaded huge coolers, great amounts of food and portable chairs in their boats, landed at the nearest scenic place on the shore and had picnics. Of course, with such a fundamental approach to canoeing it can take more than three hours to finish the tour:-)
But this approach won’t work for us, because there was also an abundance of different forbidding signs on the shore:

Especially frustrating was this sign:

There is no way we can extend a 1,5 hour tour to 3 hours without an alcohol :-)

P.S. And this is just a great picture we took that day:
